This is the second instalment of the Unknown Public series to crop here (here's the first).
It kicks off with Jocelyn Pook's Blow the Wind, which samples Kathleen Ferrier's voice along with a new vocal from Melanie Pappenheim. Apparently the inclusion of the track on this album led to it being licensed for an advert (I think it was for a mobile telephone company — aren't they all?), which must have been good news for Pook's bank balance.
That's probably my favourite track, though there's a rich and diverse range of other uses of the voice throughout the album. Sheila Chandra and Peter Blegvad are always interesting, and also included is the only new recording from Electric Phoenix that I've heard in the last twenty years.
RE: Blow the wind.
A bold approach to music and while I think Melanie Pappenheim's voice is gorgeous, it gets lost under Kathleen Ferier's ugly voice. I can't stand it.
