I mentioned the Forever Changes record shop in Sheffield before. They never seemed to stock a copy of Forever Changes themselves — at least not when I looked. So I bought this from Polar Bear down the road. They had two copies. One was the original album, just eleven tracks, second hand, and just a little over half the price of the other one, which had bonus tracks and a special cardboard wrapper for the CD jewel case. I think I knew I was making a mistake at the time, but I went for the latter. The woman at the till (Rebecca, I think, was her name) said it was her favourite album of all time. So shouldn't she have been working at the other shop?
That was in September 2001, just before members of our parliament aligned themselves with Rebecca by declaring Forever Changes "the greatest of all time". I'd managed to remain more or less oblivious to the album up to that point, and Love remain mostly an enigma to me. I know some of the stories about Arthur Lee and the song Seven and Seven Is (covered recently by everyone from Rush to Robert Plant), but that's it.
