I can't remember whether I was persuaded into buying this by something on the Pere Ubu mailing list or the Cooking Vinyl mailing list. It's a 'preview' CD for their box set
— with one of those "promotional copy only" stickers. It's got a handful of tracks from Ubu albums that I don't own, but it'll never replace Terminal Tower as a favourite Ubu compilation.
There's some grand copy on the back: "They don't sell any records. Nobody's heard of them. They hardly over tour and they change too much, too often and they don't care. What makes a band important? Pere Ubu changed the face of music. That's important. Pere Ubu reminds you why you thought rock music was ever anything anyway. That's important." And, in case you haven't got the message yet, "Pere Ubu is the most important American band of the last twenty years." (Emphasis in the original.) I wonder if David Thomas wrote that.
