Another gift from Tim. How they mount over the years. Mind you, I didn't get a card or even a text message for my birthday this year…
Like a-one, this is a bit like a hippopotamus giving a mud bath to a tortoise. Sometimes, if you go round to Tim's house, he'll have the TV on with the sound off, this music on his stereo, and a book in his lap. And a glass of red wine.
One of the fundamental characteristics of ambient music is that it should be rewarding both when you're paying close attention and also when you're just letting it create an atmosphere. Many of the tracks on this collection are fine when you listen up close. But if you're trying to read or something, they're actually quite monotonous and irritating with their reliance on repetitive 4/4 beats, as in Your Mind by Los Jugaderos, or the aimless bass-heavy throb of Tribe of Benjamin, which just makes me feel like I've got a headache coming on.
I'm not saying there aren't a few good tracks on this, but I can find a comfortable listening style that would enable me to find and enjoy them.
