You remember how we decided this was one bandwagon we were going to jump onto, before everyone knew about it? I think I drew your attention to a feature in the NME about this new band, The Jesus and Mary Chain, in late '84. They played sets of only 15 minutes or so of chaos and feedback, at the end of which they trashed everything and incited a riot. Over coffee we decided to follow the gospel according to the NME, that this was 'the most exciting thing to happen to music since punk' (a phrase that wasn't yet tired and hackneyed, back then).
I think we both bought copies of this first single when it came out. I still think it sounds like a Beach Boys melody and rhythm hidden behind a glaze of noise.
We played it on Dave's disco gear right at the end of your 21st birthday party in the Johns cellars. Dave never had a name for his disco, did he? It was just Dave and Jit's Disco. Brand-free, no logo, all word of mouth. Of course, people came running one after the other to the turntable to say, "There's something wrong with your stylus, can't you hear?" And with each one, the patronising look we gave them became more withering. Ooh, we withered them, we did, with our NME know-how.
The cover of my single is different from the one shown on the Discogs entry, but I've checked the run-out grooves, and, like it says there, mine read "Bless me Iggy / for I have sinned". At the time of writing, a copy with the same picture sleeve as mine is going for £25.
