I think I got this out of the bargain bin in a shop in Tonbridge that mostly sold hi-fi, but had some record racks as well (I remember it being on the right as you went down towards the station, just past the castle). When did those hi-fi shops stop selling records? Twenty years ago? More?
Oddly, though the song is credited just to the Buggles' members, it came out the year after Yes's Drama album, which featured the eight-and-a-half-minute song Into the Lens, which is based on this song (and credited to all the members of Yes). I don't remember much about the Yes version, but I bet it didn't have a drum machine on it, like this one.
I don't remember this single troubling the charts at all, but I just found the video for it, which I'd never seen before:
Two observations: in those days, nerds like Trevor Horn could front pop bands, and still feature in their own videos, rather than being consigned to the backroom, where Horn has been since 1983; secondly he was willing to take the piss out of his trademark glasses.
