I think I probably first came to Parliament via the unlikely source of David Byrne, who used to mention them in interviews, and nicked their keyboard player, Bernie Worrell, who played with Talking Heads (including on Stop Making Sense).
Lots of things seem to link into and out of Parliament, from Sun Ra to The Beatnigs. Being a dilettante, particularly as regards funk, I've never quite absorbed the rich and tangled history of Parliament-Funkadelic. It's all a bit of a blur.
To get the most out of this album, I think it's better to listen to it in four parts of fifteen to twenty minutes — like an old double LP — rather than trying to take it all in in one 78-minute session.
