D and I went to see the Cowboy Junkies when they played at the Sheffield Memorial Hall sometime in 2001 or 2002. She left in a bit of a funk because all the songs were so unrelentingly sad, but I loved the show, and it reminded me of what I had liked about them when I first came across them in the late eighties. I bought six of their albums in the space of just over a year.
I don't think this is Cowboy Junkies at their best. After the distinctive auras of both The Trinity Sessions and The Caution Horses, this has the sound filled out by guest musicians, and it feels like the songs become more normal and anonymous as a result.
