An American bootleg, released in 1988, with one side made up of 1965 solo acoustic demos, and the other claiming to be from one of the Carnegie Hall concerts on 4 December 1970.
The demos are interesting, just to hear what Neil voice and delivery were like that early in his career. Later on I got a better version of them on a CD bootleg.
Pete Long's Ghosts on the Road book shows that the live side with Crazy Horse is not from Carnegie Hall (most of the songs on the record were not played in either of the two shows there), but Pete identifies as them as from the 25 February 1970 gig at Music Hall, Cincinatti. I haven't done a direct comparison, but the version of Downtown here could be the same one that was officially released on Tonight's the Night, with Danny Whitten on lead vocals.
I probably paid an arm and a leg for this pretty crappy bootleg. Eventually… eventually… it will become redundant and worthless when recordings like this turn up in better versions on Neil Young's official archives. The age of bootlegs and rarities is passing, and I won't mourn it. I feel a bit guilty now for encouraging the rip-off merchants by paying their stupid inflated prices.
