There are probably only one or two degrees of separation between Luna and Mercury Rev (see yesterday), but I can't think what the links might be just now.
Luna probably wouldn't have registered on my radar were it not for them being led by Dean Wareham from Galaxie 500, one of my favourite bands. On the face of it they put out fairly unremarkable mid-tempo rock (I think they call it 'college rock' in America, presumably because it's mostly played on college radio stations). However, there's something about their sound that rewards repeated listening, and Dean's urbane and elliptical lyrics help too.
Not that they hold much of a candle to Galaxie 500. I know some people who actually prefer Luna. I've had arguments with them. It's like preferring Wings to the Beatles.
Do visit Andy Aldridge's beautiful fan site for all your Luna needs. His most recent poll rated this album as Luna's third best, and I'd agree with that, though the only others I know are those at Numbers 1 and 2 in the chart.
