I'd forgotten just how close to jazz this album is. I heard somewhere that, among Zappa albums, it's much more popular in the UK than in the US. Possibly because it has fewer of the potty-mouth lyrics that used to put off the 'serious' types that are drawn to the compositional elements of the music.
Just yesterday I came across this review, which I think is pretty good.
I remember shortly after I met Tim and I was trying to suss out what kind of music he liked without asking directly. Zappa's death had been announced that day or the day before, so I asked whether it meant much to him. We both agreed that the ideas behind Zappa's music always sounded interesting, but the music itself didn't quite connect.
