I saw Organelles play when I attended the Modal 2001 music festival/conference in Sheffield (Modal, sadly now defunct, was put together by the great Pete Holden). I liked them, so I bought a CD off the singer afterwards. He assumed — naturally enough in the context of a music industry event — that I might be a promoter, A&R person or such-like, so I had to explain that I was just a bloke who quite liked what he'd heard.
Unfortunately, when I played the album, it didn't have the same energy or bite as their live performance, and I hardly listened to it again.
Listening through to it twice over this afternoon, it's certainly attractive enough, but not quite remarkable enough. The last track is more exceptional: extended and multi-faceted. The album reminded me once or twice of the ethos of Hugo Largo, though with trumpet substituted for violin, and it's no surprise to find that the only radio play mentioned on their web site was on Late Junction.
The last activity mentioned on their web site was over eighteen months ago, so I don't know whether they're still going.
