This album was about the time I tuned out from Sonic Youth's career for a while. I think I bought it around the time it came out, though I hadn't got Goo (still haven't), but then didn't buy any more of their albums for about six years.
This still sounds like Sonic-Youth-by-numbers to me, and I thought it was arse-about-face that they borrowed Nirvana's producer and a bit of their sound, when Nirvana's success was based exactly on their failed attempt to imitate the full terror of Sonic Youth — thus making them more palatable to a mass market.
Sugar Kane is good, though. "Burn it," as they say in those reviews that feel they have to spell out that they're iPod-savvy.
The reference to Neil Young in Crème Brûlée (Last night I dreamt I kissed Neil Young / If I was a boy guess it would be fun) followed their support slot on Young's First Gulf War-era Weld tour. Apparently a lot of Young fans booed them, but it would have been a dream ticket for me.
