Hugo Largo were the missing link between Young Marble Giants and the Kronos Quartet.
When this came out (late 1988/early 1989?) they got lots of attention thanks to praise from Michael Stipe, who produced their first album, and the fact that they were on Brian Eno's record label in the UK — well, that was enough to get my attention, anyway. Then they never produced another album.
I haven't listened to this for ages, so I'm surprised how well I remember the tunes. When I saw R.E.M. on the 'Green' tour in about May 1989, Stipe had the habit of singing little a cappella sketches between the songs. One of these was based on a Hugo Largo song.
You can see why they didn't catch on. There are too many scary bits between the pretty bits to appeal to the thinking person's new age market. Good for them.
