I've probably got more 12" singles/EPs by the Cocteau Twins than by anyone else. This is the earliest of their releases that I've got (released in 1982), though it's probably one of the last I bought.
Though I don't think this matches what you might call the fully realised version of the Cocteau Twins that was to come two or three years later, it still sounds pretty extraordinary — especially It's All but an Ark Lark.
This is the kind of record that makes us forty-year-olds scratch our beards and wonder aloud whether music as bold and single-minded as this is being made today, and, if it is, whether it would make it onto the radio. (And I speak as someone who thinks that radio in general is wonderful right now, and vastly better than it was in 1982.) God bless John Peel — again.
