Happy New Year! Today's random selection from my collection is a snapshot of a few slices of the leftfield music scene exactly ten years ago, in 1996, when it was attached to the cover of The Wire magazine.
The trouble is that these covermount CDs, no matter how good they are, just don't hold your attention like something that you've actually made a decision to buy. When someone's selected the tracks for you, it's more like listening to a radio show.
So I had to put it on to remind myself about the tracks on this compilation. Some of it — like Photek, Baader Meinhof and Future Sound of London — reminds me very clearly of that era where the term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) had recently been coined. You don't hear breakbeats like these any more. Well, I don't, but that may just be my age.
The D*Note track, Minimal, is an homage to Steve Reich that verges on simple plagiarism.
