As it happens, I was just on the phone to Steve a few hours ago. We talked about baby buggies for his forthcoming US tour with Lobelia and (not on the bill, just the roadie) Baby Flapjack. I meant to mention that I'd be writing about this CD today, but we got distracted, comparing the mix of principle and tactics that had informed our votes: having just read this article, I have a sinking feeling about the outcome.
So this is the third CD Steve gave me the day we met (1, 2). Most of the tracks are duets between Steve and his "eighties ironic singing lady" wife — see the video at the foot of this post for the source of that description, but for now, here's one of the tracks on the EP.
The eighties ironic singing is fun at live shows, but on record the piece that really does it for me is the extended, textured, ambient Rain. The Gracenote database has this album tagged as "new age". If that's right — and I'm guessing Steve may have contributed the ID3 tags himself — then it's my favourite example of the genre. Looping techniques aside, it kind of reminds me of When Heart is Open on Van Morrison's Common One album.
Finally, this video is something Steve put together with xtranormal to promote their Office Gigs perfomances. Book 'em.
