I must have stumbled across this in a shop; I'd never have gone out of my way to order it.
Perhaps David Shea's name caught my eye and attracted me. But, if so, did I fail to notice that he only has one four-and-a-half-minute track on this CD. It's an unremarkable piece.
How much, if anything, did I know about Charles Hayward then? Possibly that he was part of This Heat, whose work (well, mainly one track, on multiple compilations) is dotted around my collection (1, 2, 3, 4). I saw him play in Billy Jenkins' band once: like Billy, and now me, he's stuck in the south east corner of London. But that was years after I got this CD. Hayward has also played with Gong and Crass, I see: This Heat were one of those acts — like Fred Frith, possibly Eno, and, if you stretch it a bit, Fripp — who successfully straddled prog and punk. Art school helped, I guess (no, I don't know if Hayward went, but I'd guess he did: tape loops + found sounds ⇒ art school). Anyway, I like his drumming. His voice…? Maybe it's an acquired taste, but it's not one I'm going to spend time acquiring. I found his three songs hard work for that reason…
… but not as hard as Nûs, about whom I knew nothing before or since buying this CD. Their impact on the world, as measured by presence on the web, was small — though I found this trace.
So, I hope it was cheap.
