I haven't liveblogged anything for a while, so here goes. First listen to this CD that came with The Wire in 2002. Don't know anything about this, other than that Tigerbeat6 is a record label. Kid606 is the only familiar name on the tracklist. Ah, Wikipedia tells me he runs the label.
Hello (constant sorrow) by Nathan Michel: Okaaaay, if this is a statement of intent as regards the rest of the disc, it's going to be very Wire-y. Arch, glitsch, kitsch, all rolled up and spliced together in one post-everything melée. Surprised to be told by Last.fm that Nathan is an academic — first impression was of a bedroom autodidact.
We Like Having These Things by Numbers. Now there's lyrics. Power pop says Last.fm. Yep.
Longer by Kid 606. Jeez, these tracks are too short to make liveblogging viable. Heeelp, it's over already.
Straight from your Radio by Gold Chains. Quite liked this while it was just a minimalist recitation of (telephone?) numbers. When the rap started it… well, still quite good, possibly, but would need a few listens to make up my mind.
Hugluvsuck by COM.A. Nice name; not so good for including in a URL, mind. More glitch. Breakcore say Last.fm — hadn't heard of that one before. It's growing on me.
Brutal Exposure by Cex. I can hear the legacy of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts at the start. Liking the beats, and the rap is smart. Yes, I think this might be my favourite so far.
devoiced by Dwayne Sodahberk. Starting to get to diminishing returns now. It's a bit lower case, this one.
Important Youth Movement by Stars as Eyes. But this one is upping the ante again. Like the way the tempo shifts towards the end.
local forecast by Casino vs. Japan vs. Nudge. Is that the Mick Karn & David Sylvian Japan? I don't think so. More lower case noodling. Interrupted by someone at the door, though not from Porlock.
Interspecies Love by Kevin Blechdom. Ah, I told I lie, I've heard of Kevin before, via The Wire, Mixing It and even saw her once at the ICA, I think. A song! How retro. Slightly distracted now: the guy at my door was delivering my new electric toothbrush.
Astricken by Äelters. More glitch. Toothbrush plugged in and charging.
Needlepoint by Cul de Sac. Last.fm bio makes them sound interesting. This track, less so. Though it brightens up in the last 90 seconds.
The Bilingus Cufflinks by Electric Company vs. Lexanculpt. They're taking the piss with that track title. More respect, boys (no question that they're boys, even though Last.fm has an enigmatic plea: "We don't have a description for this artist yet, care to help?")!
Tombei the Mist by Pimmon. Now that's a much better title! I'm won over almost from the start. Something oriental and Roedelius-like about the spirit of this, even though it doesn't sound like Roedelius. Great stuff.
II by Main. What was I saying at the start?! Of course I've heard of Main too. They were one of the first ensembles I heard that made this particular kind of nonmusical music.
Siamang by Electric Company. I think I need a break now. I'm suffering buffer overflow of the ears.
4merly 4mally 4mula by Kevin Blechdom. Oh, OK, just one more. Not a song this time, but still very poppy. I'm surprised Kevin hasn't had a novelty hit. Perhaps she has. Right: coffee, Eno and reading.
…
Untitled_11 by Lesser. Back again, but this is frankly unwelcoming. More breakcore, but not as enjoyable as COM.A. I'm heading off again.
Mummys Secret Storage by Blectum from Blechdom. I don't understand why some of these musicians can't just stick to one name like the rest of us do.
Vogv by Wobbly; Fakin' the Punk by Knifehandchop; Now I'm Completely Ruined by Kid606 vs. Dalek. No, it's no good, I can't get back into this at all: these tracks can no longer compete with the other distractions available on my computer.
Sad Motherfucker, Pt 2 by Kid606. This is a bit easier on the ear.
After #4 Matrix Sndtrk. Rob D "Clubbed To Death" by Cex. Ending with an enigmatic answerphone message. Stylish.
