I'm struggling to remember when and where I got this 7" single. It was in 2003, but my records don't say when. I thought it might have been at the Spitz gig where Lucy and I saw July Skies supporting The Clientele (mentioned last week). There was a Tangents postcard tucked inside the sleeve — as though I got it mail order from Alistair? But neither I nor my old Eudora mailboxes have any memory of that, and the archived Tangents site has no mention of this four-track EP. So let's stick with the original story and just assume that July Skies were cross-promoting Tangents via their merchandise: after all, the webzine had many very positive things to say about July Skies.
In truth I have a little bit of a deaf spot for the Skies, as I'm sure no one calls them. I know it's the kind of thing that I ought to like (I'm not going to describe it, for I fear I'd find it hard to avoid iffy words like "pastoral"). I'm slightly put off by the use of a sample of the BBC Shipping Forecast on one of the tracks. Terence Davies got away with it in Distant Voices, before it became a cliché, a cipher for a nostalgic projection of Old England. An England where Radio 4/the Home Service wasn't just for the chattering classes.
