I've listened to this CD several times now since it arrived eight weeks ago (I've never understood why the December issues of magazines have to come out in the first week of November — is it to show that they've got December's features quicker than Q and Mojo have got it?! — it must have been written my mid-October). The track I'm most interested in is still the one I was interested in before I played it at all: the one by Headless Heroes. I wish their album would come out on eMusic — I've been enjoying Alela Diane's album since I got it from Amie Street about a year and a half ago, but her singing voice with Headless Heroes is something quite different; less folky twang, more operatic pop.
The album I dipped into on eMusic is Moris Tepper's. Though not on the strength of his track on this CD (which I don't like much) but on the basis of Kate Mossman's review in Word. She gave a detailed account of Tepper's musical biography — for me, he'll always be associated with an unpleasant night at The Spitz on 10 July 2004 — followed by some lavish praise for the versatility of the album, and especially the singing, before admitting at the end that she'd never heard of the bloke until the CD arrived on her desk. How refreshing for a reviewer not to have to pretend that they have an Olympian overview of all music ever made, and to admit to doing some research. After all, I think KM perhaps hadn't been born when Tepper played on Captain Beefheart's last album, so she has an excuse.
My Word subscription renewal letter arrived recently — I took out a three-year sub early in 2006. I haven't done anything with it yet.
