The subtitle of this covermount compilation is "17-Track Guide to the Month's Best Music". Huh? How did Billy MacKenzie, who died in 1997, get to be part of May 2001's best music, let alone I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night by The Electric Prunes — included on the Nuggets 1965-68 collection?
So Uncut rebranded their Unconditionally Guaranteed series, and the alt.country dominance has dropped slightly (down to two tracks). But there's nothing coherent to take its place: it just seems like a rag-bag assortment of whatever was cheap to license at the time. So I was surprised to see in the credits that Roy Carr and Allan Jones were still at the helm, doing the compiling.
I quite like the Eddi Reader track (I'm a sucker for anyone with red hair and strong cheekbones), but I'm surprised anyone actually plays these CDs enough to discover new artists through them. I don't think I ever made it through to the end until today.
