Various: All Saints Calling

All Saints CallingThis compilation is bookended by some hymnal pieces that have gone down well this Easter weekend, with the snow. It opens with We Stay Still by Roger Eno and Kate St John, which sounds distinctly liturgical to me. Even if the lyrics are secular and could almost be a love song, lines like "Peace be with you now" and "Hours slip away / Days they fill / The years they rush over us" give it a more mystical feeling.

Towards the end of the CD, Prayer for the Living by Channel Light Vessel (also featuring Eno Jr and St John) is explicitly religious and quotes from an old English hymn, the name of which escapes me. Then it's rounded off by a couple of Roger Eno solo pieces, including one sung in Latin.

In the middle of the album there are some hauntingly spiritual drones from the Armenian, Djivan Gasparyan.

As a result the more upbeat pieces by John Hassell with 808 State and Laughing in Tongues by Laraaji rather break the mood.

As with Future Perfect, this is a sampler from the All Saints record label, which seems to be an umbrella for several members of the extended Eno family (it's run by Brian's brother-in-law).
