I'm more or less over it now, but I don't mind telling you that, when I realised that for the second time in five days I couldn't find a CD in my collection, I was not a happy chappie.
Unlike the Beth Orton case, though, I have no recollection of seeing it or playing. In fact I remember hardly anything of Hamilton Yarns. Yet my records show that I saw them playing a free gig in the Barbican foyer, supporting Gruff Rhys and Robin Williamson, on the afternoon of 17 July 2005. (Such a privilege to have opportunities like that five minutes' walk from home!)
And I know that I definitely bought the CD then and got it home: my catalogue has a note, "With hand drawn booklet".
It's true that the cover, visible on this web page, does look vaguely familiar — but that could be a two-and-a-half-year-old memory trace.
I rate the chances of this showing up again before another house move at less than 1 in 20. Maybe I should just order another one — what do you think?
Update, 28 June 2008: Aha, I was wrong! While looking for something else (of course), I found it in one of the skips that still adorn my office 14 months after we moved here. I'm playing the CD now. It's not hitting the spot right away, I have to admit. It's a bit like Tunng might sound if they didn't care about building an audience. Have a listen Hamilton Yarns – I saw a fox to see what I mean.
You can actually download the whole album for free from Last.fm if you want. So maybe they do want to build an audience after all.
