I remember quite liking Novocaine for the Soul when it was in the charts, but it was the endorsement of being played on Mixing It that made it safe for a snob like me to consider liking Eels.
Still I think it was several years before I actually bought this album. By then it was a fiver from Fopp. I went into the Earham Street branch of Fopp last week, for the first time since it was taken over by HMV. It's just the same, though with an increasing variety of albums for only three quid, including the inevitable Rat Pack compilations and other dross like Screamadelica, but also one or two decent albums. I maintained sufficient discipline not to buy anything.
I saw Eels, with Jonathan and Lynne, at the Octagon in Sheffield in 1998. I can't remember anything about the gig itself, except that it was on a Sunday. And this album has a similar lack of substance about it, the only memorable tracks being the singles.
