I got this two years ago at the annual Jeays Christmas Show at the Battersea Barge, to complete my set of Jeays CDs. We're waiting for the next one, Phil.
These Christmas gigs are request shows determined by raffle. A ticket is drawn at the end of each song, and if it's yours you get to choose the next song. We've gone three years in a row now, bought a total of ten tickets, and not one of those tickets has ever come up.
As I kind of touched on with the last Jeays album, I find I don't listen to his CDs very often. In an average year (one without a new album but with, say, three London gigs), I probably spend more time listening to Philip Jeays in person than on his recordings.
So I go to the gigs and someone requests — as they did in December 2005 — Racing Days and I think, "I don't know that song; perhaps it's a new one," and it turns out to be brilliant, and it turns out I've had it on CD for years… Except in this particular case, Racing Days is on the CD that I'd just bought that day, so I hadn't had it for years: bad example, David, you fool. Try again. So, on the Philip Jeays Fan Club Facebook page someone (rather attractive!) has written "Phil, I'm listening to 'Catherine'… it's BEAUTIFUL! xxxx". And I thought, "I don't know that song; perhaps it's a new one," and it turns out to be… kind of OK…, and it turns out I've had it on CD for nearly two years. Q.E.D!
This year's show is in twelve days' time. If our table doesn't get at least one request, there'll be trouble. I may go for Racing Days if I get the chance. There's always a fantastic atmosphere in the cosiness of the barge, with the lights over the river, and good food. Unfortunately it sold out weeks ago (at least the seated tickets did), so you've left it too late. But I recommend listening to, and reading, Racing Days instead. Take it from there.
