James: Just Like Fred Astaire

Justlikefred1Another set of James songs that accompanied my turbulent autumn of 1999 (see also Seven).

During one of our telephone calls at the time, M said she imagined me singing this song to A. "Just met a girl who believes we can fly"? I don't think so. Much more appropriate at the time would have been the second song on the first CD, a duet with Sinead O'Connor, and possibly the best of all the songs on either CD:

We had managed the bend
Between lover and friend,
Found a place we could possibly meet

Yes it's me,
I can't help myself,
I just run headlong to defeat

Yes, though it seemed we might have managed that bend, we never did.

This is the third single from the same James album, and I bought multiple copies of all of them, like the duped fan I was — see We're Going to Miss You and I Know What I'm Here For. And how much are these "collectors' items" worth now? You can buy both for 11 pence…
