dEUS: Worst Case Scenario

dEUS: Worst Case ScenarioThough I haven't listened to it for, I would guess, twelve years, and possibly the full thirteen since it came out, I have two distinct memories about this album. The first is that I heard of dEUS via Mixing It on Radio 3, rather than 'normal' rock radio. The second is rather less dramatic, but bear with me. Around the time the album came out (1994), dEUS played upstairs at the Hallamshire on West Street in Sheffield. I was going to go, but didn't for some reason — probably lethargy. I don't know why I remember these things, still less why I repeat them.

Following the long period in abeyance, I had no idea what this would sound like… Notwithstanding its origins in Antwerp, it doesn't sound in the least Belgian. Much more like Portland, Oregon. It's a form of rock that's more off-centre and interesting than Nirvana, but not as off-centre or interesting as Neutral Milk Hotel.
