Miles Davis: Miles in the Sky
One of many Miles CDs I bought in 2001 and 2002, all from Fopp for a fiver. They'd be lined up on the shelf, irresistible. I never bought more than one at a time. That would be like having two cream cakes. But I kept coming back for more.
The sleeve notes on this remastered&expanded reissue observe how the album is "still one of Davis' more overlooked works, [which] signalled that the floodgates of what would come to be called 'fusion' were about to be cast wide open." It does seem that the significance of the album is based mainly on what happened next.
I don't know it very well, but I think my favourite track is Country Son — one of the least fusion-style pieces — available in two equally enjoyable takes. And to my ears, it's Tony Williams on drums and Herbie Hancock on keyboards who make their presence felt most.
