Soulstarr: The Birth of Song - A Failed Attempt at Rock Monstrosity

ThebirthofsongThis CD EP is a bit of an orphan and a mystery — a twin to Dummy Head Stereo three weeks ago. I suspect that, as with DHS, it was a free giveaway at a convention; most likely MusicWorks in Glasgow, 2005 (see also Is this Music?), since Soulstarr are/were a Scottish band.

Soulstarr's website shows no sign of update in the last 15 months, there's an enigmatic post on their MySpace page about their last gig having been over a year ago, and all the recent posts on their forum seem to be link spam. So could it be that this band had ceased to exist before I got round to taking the cellophane wrapping off the CD?

If anyone from Soulstarr ever read this, I'm sure that they'd be horrified by my laziness (as well as my tardiness), but after a couple of listens, I'd say their sound is three parts bombast-era Snow Patrol and one part early-70s Pink Floyd… Except for the last of the five songs — can you tell I'm listening as I write? — High 5's and Handshakes, which is a bit noisier… welcomely so.
