Sly and the Family Stone: Fame and Fortune
It's always embarrassing when someone plays you something out of your collection and you don't recognise it. You feel found out. I mentioned one time that it happened before, and it happened with this CD as well. Jo and Andy came round to my house on Psalter Lane one time in 2002 and I told Jo, "Choose something and put it on". After three of four tracks, I still didn't have a clue who it was.
I'm pretty sure I bought this new for £3 or less from a bargain rack somewhere, with the intent of using it as an intro to Sly Stone. I don't have any wider reference points to judge properly, but I suspect it's a bad intro. This seems to be a very shoddy compilation. No sleeve notes. The song writing credits are inconsistent (referring variously to Sly Stewart, Sylvester Stewart and just Stewart) and sometimes just wrong: Seventh Son was written by Willie Dixon, not Sylvester Stewart. It was issued in 2001 by Bianco Music, and you can tell from their website what a great company they turned out to be.
Not worth a penny more than £2.99.
