I can't remember when I got this. It must have been before I got the vinyl, and then the CD, versions of the album from which it comes.
It wasn't love on first hearing. First hearing would have been around the time it came out, and people at school used to ask if I would tape the Simple Minds and Echo & the Bunnymen records they'd borrowed from their friends. I hardly listened to the records at the time — I was still submerged in Yes and King Crimson, plus maybe a bit of Japan — it was only a couple of years later that the penny started to drop for me.
I saw Simple Minds in Munich on the New Gold Dream tour in March 1983, but I couldn't say whether they played Love Song that night. Lou had a tape of the Sons and Fascination album that we listened to a lot at the end of 1985. Perhaps I got this single shortly after that. I'd say it's one of the three great singles from Simple Minds' glory days, before the fall.
