This 7" single was part of a batch of recordings I got imported from Mother West four years ago. All but one of the recordings were LD Beghtol projects: he follows the Stephin Merritt model in leading two bands (Flare, and LD and the New Criticism) and being half of the Moth Wranglers.
And this single is a re-mix by Stephin Merritt — on see-through vinyl — all of which makes it ripe for record collector fetishists. Not that I think of myself as one.
The song sounds like This Mortal Coil doing the Velvet Underground, and the re-mix isn't that different from the album version, except that it seems to have a more lo-fi feel and is one and a half minutes shorter (the 'beata virgo' section is cut from the end) — all round more like a 7" single. Somehow the re-mix sounds even more maudlin.
I corresponded with LD Beghtol on and off the Stephinsongs email list, and met him briefly after a couple of the 'full cast' performances of 69 Love Songs at the Lyric Hammersmith in 2001. He contributed enthusiastically to my 69 Love Songs wiki site.
